Peppadews are a relatively new discovery to those of us in the United States. Peppadews are a fruit native to the Limpono province of South Africa that now can be found on many gourmet shop olive bars and specialty supermarket shelves. At first glance, one may confuse this bright red “pepper” for a cherry pepper or tomato but take one bite and you’re in for a big surprise.
Peppadews have a unique and distinct flavor beginning with a tender sweetness and following up with a matchless kick. The incredibly harmonious blend of sweet and spice presents an opportunity for some delectable uses.
Stuffed Peppadews: Peppadews stuffed with cheese are a flavorful combination. Experiment with different varieties of cheese – goat cheese, brie, camembert, etc. My personal favorite is peppadews stuffed with wasabi goat cheese.
Sandwich Idea: Spread your favorite humus on a baguette and top with roasted vegetables, alfalfa sprouts and peppadews.
Dip/Spread Idea: Mix chopped peppadews with cream cheese or goat cheese and enjoy as a dip or spread with veggies and crackers.
Pasta Idea: Combine peppadews, asparagus and roasted eggplant. Serve over angel hair pasta or in a risotto for a different yet delightful fusion of tastes.
Or, consider topping a traditional garden salad or soup with peppadews to add some color and excitement to an everyday meal.
Be creative but, most of all enjoy this extraordinarily delicious discovery!
