Fiddlehead Ferns - Not Just a New England Delicacy

If you are from New England, you may have had the treat of trying fiddleheads. However, in many parts of the world, fiddlehead ferns are a little known delicacy.

Fiddlehead ferns are the unfurled fronds of a fern that are harvested specifically for food consumption. They are in season in early spring and can ere towards the expensive side when it comes to vegetables especially if there is not a large crop in-season. Fiddleheads are surprisingly versatile and easy to use. Traditionally, fiddleheads are served boiled (appx. ten minutes) or steamed (appx. twenty minutes). However, there are many applications in order to fully enjoy this short-seasoned woody flavored vegetable.

Appetizer Ideas: Pickled Fiddleheads; Fiddlehead and Mushroom Soup;

Side Dish Ideas: Warm Fiddlehead Salad (great recipe can be found at Bouchonfor2); Wasabi Soy Fiddleheads; Steamed Fiddleheads with Horseradish Scallion Sauce;

Entrée Ideas: Angel Hair with Fiddleheads and Shrimp; Fiddlehead & Mushroom Quiche; Sea Bass with Crab, Fiddleheads, Coconut Sauce and Hazelnuts; Curried Crab and Fiddleheads; Grilled Swordfish and Fiddleheads with Tomato Basil Salsa;

Be creative and most of all enjoy!

I used to pick fiddleheads with my grandfather and he'd boil them up and eat them with vinegar. Great memories and good eats!
